Singapore had a city-wide lockdown on account of Covid-19 through April and May 2020. Even before that, domestic workers were strongly advised not to congregate on their rest days, but to remain in the employer’s residence seven days a week.

This continued even after the lockdown was partly lifted in early June. They’ve not been permitted to socialise in large groups.

But they had lots of practice using their smart phones. We decided to ask them to put it to good use.

“Make us a little video; answer a few simple questions,” we suggested to the Indonesian Family Network, a TWC2-affiliated self-help group of Indonesian domestic workers.

“Tell us something about living in Singapore, being away from home.”

They did.
