For new volunteers joining the Discover Singapore team: Please read this page to better understand the activities and tasks expected of volunteers. Then send a confirmation email to “DiscoverSingapore@twc2.org.sg” to say that you have read this page. Also mention in the email which of the tasks listed below you are best able to help out with.

Structure of the Discover Singapore team

The team is led by a core group of 3 – 4 persons who make decisions about where to go for worker-excursions, and who also have responsibility for the budget. The core group may canvas ideas from time to time from other volunteers. Once a decision about dates and destination is made, the following activities and tasks will need to be performed:

Support activities that volunteers can help with

1. Design and print a poster, to advertise to TWC2 worker-clients the upcoming excursion event. If you are able to help design posters, please indicate so in your confirmation email.

2. In the week leading up to the event, promote the event to worker-clients at TWC2’s meal stations. Take down a list of names and phone numbers of those keen to join the event. The volunteer is expected to be at the meal station during a weekday evening between 6:30 and 8:30 pm, showing workers the poster and telling them about the excursion event. If you are able to help with this, please indicate so in your confirmation email.

3. In the day before the event, help send out reminder sms to names on the registration list. This is to inform workers when and where to meet to board the bus for the event. If you are able to help with this, please indicate so in your confirmation email.

4. During the event itself, arrive early at the boarding point (almost always a location in Little India) to ensure orderly boarding and do a headcount. If you are able to help with this, please indicate so in your confirmation email.

5. Plan and prepare materials for games during the event. At the event itself, lead the games activities that you have planned. If you are able to help with this, please indicate so in your confirmation email.

6. During the event, assist the core organisers in keeping the event on schedule.

7. Be in charge of taking photographs of the event. If you are able to help with this, please indicate so in your confirmation email.

8. After the event, write up a nice story for our Facebook page. If you are able to help with this, please indicate so in your confirmation email.

Self costs

It is important to note the following: Whilst most excursion events are designed to go to places that do not charge admission, there may be times when, with donor support, we choose to go to a place with paid admission. The general principle is that TWC2 will pick up the tab for admission charges of workers, but only for  a small number of key volunteers (the ratio is: 1 volunteer’s cost for every 10 workers). Therefore, volunteers who choose to come along for these events should generally be prepared to pay their own costs.

This is in keeping with donation principles that TWC2 adheres to — which is that donations are used to pay for workers’ benefit, not for staff or volunteers except at the barest minimum.

After you’ve sent your confirmation email

After you have sent a confirmation email to “DiscoverSingapore@twc2.org.sg”, the core group of the team will elevate you to “Associate” status in the Discover Singapore team. When elevated, each time you log into Bahamas (TWC2’s online volunteering platform), you will be able to see the upcoming Discover Singapore events and can sign up for them. By signing up, the core group will know to expect your involvement in helping to organise the event.

You will also be asked to join their WhatsApp group to make coordination easier.
