Channel NewsAsia (reported) on 28 January 2013 that seven employers were convicted for failure to give foreign workers acceptable housing in 2012.
In total, 1,062 employers were warned or fined in 2012 for providing foreign workers with poor accommodation, the news report said. Since only seven were “convicted”, it appears that the “fined” were perhaps those who paid compound fines. The report however was not precise about that nor did it provide a figure distinguishing the warned from the fined.
By comparison, enforcement action was taken against 1,069 employers in 2011, the story said.
In 2012, MOM inspected 865 workers’ quarters. Typically, they would be joint operations involving the Singapore Civil Defence Force, National Environment Agency, Urban Redevelopment Authority and the police.
